Reviving the Sunnah of Adornment in Prayer

Assalam alaykum Dear Readers,

Muslim islamic prayer thin mesh hat 150x150 Reviving the Sunnah of Adornment in PrayerToday we share and remind ourselves and you the importance of clean & tidy appearance and covering the head (for men) in prayer, Jummah or any other Muslim gathering. Too often we see brothers and youth, turning up to the Masjid in discoloured or dirty prayer hats, (mesh hat, Tupi). There is no excuse for this really when they only cost £1, many of us spend £5 + just on something to eat or snack on after jummah, why not spare £1 and get yourself a nice clean, new one that’s bright white & attractive in colour? Why not fulfill your intentions to complete the Sunnah to the best of your capability?

Covering the head for brothers, is not compulsory (fard) but is highly recommended and plays a huge part of the excellence of adornment which Allah ordered when He said:

“O Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer”

Quran (7: 31).

If one cannot afford a shirt or a head-cover, he may pray without them, but if he can, (and for just £1 who can’t?) then he is remiss in obeying Allah in this verse and in heeding the Prophet in the hadith:

“Allah likes to see the mark of His benevolence on His servant.”

(al-Hakim and Tirmidhi, hasan).

Wearing the prayer hat (Tupi), the jilbab, izar (loin-wrap), thowb (long cloth), `imama (turban), jubba (coat or mantle), sirwal (baggy pants) and so forth is all of the Prophet’s Sunnah of dress. We shouldn’t want to reduce this aspect of Islam to an unimportant or unnecessary Sunnah. There is no such thing as an unimportant or unnecessary Sunnah. We should remember the often said statement that no Sunnah of his is abandoned except an innovation (bid`a) is adopted in exchange; inversely he said:

“Whoever gives life to one of my Sunnah’s which was eliminated after my time will receive the reward of all those who practice it without their reward being diminished…” Tirmidhi (hasan), Book of knowledge; al-Baghawi, Sharh al-sunna 1:233

“Whoever gives life to one of my Sunnah’s, he loves me: and whoever loves me is with me.” (Tirmidhi hasan gharib, Book of knowledge.)

“The keeper of my Sunnah at the time my Community has lapsed into corruption will receive the reward of a martyr”.  (al-Mundhiri, al-Targhib 1:87; al-Hakim)

And Abu Hurayra narrates the following hadith in Muslim, Nasa’i, Malik, and Ahmad:

The Prophet came to the graveyard and said: “Peace be upon you, O abode of a people of believers! We shall certainly join you, if Allah will. How I long to see my brothers!” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, are we not your brothers?” He replied: “You are my Companions! As for my brothers, they are those who have not yet appeared.” They said: “How will you recognize those of your Community who had not yet appeared (in your time), O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “Suppose a man had horses with shiny white marks on their foreheads and legs: would he not recognize them among other horses which are all black?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” He continued: “Verily, they (my brothers) shall be coming with shiny bright foreheads and limbs due to their ablutions, and I shall precede them to my Pond.”

Does this not make you yearn to be among the blessed prophet’s (saaws) brothers? Shining from their heads and legs?

This post wasn’t written with the intention of getting into fiqh issues nor was it written to mock or humiliate anybody, our sole intention was to remind ourselves first and of course our community, that if you wish to adorn yourself islamically for Jummah or for any other Muslim occasion and you wish to do so with the intention of reward, then we must adorn ourselves to the best of our capability, and that means to make sure we are wearing clean, ironed and smart clothing, not dirty, mismatched and creased smelly clothing.

May Allah swt guide us and forgive us and give us the tawfiq in understanding and practicing the deen in the correct manner that HE swt will be most pleased with. Please forgive us if we said anything that might have come across insensitive, wrong or rude. Anything good in this post was from Allah swt and anything wrong or bad was in our human error.
